Join FlashLight Expeditions tour leader Dylan Goldby for an afternoon of breathtaking portraiture. We’ll be covering everything from the basics of lenses to getting multiple looks from a single scene and everything in between.
Seoul can be a daunting place to shoot portraits simply because of the sheer number of people that litter every street and every corner. But, with a little creativity and a little practice, it can become a great place to shoot all kinds of portraits.
What will this workshop cover?
The course will last 6 hours and will cover the following:
- choosing a lens for portraiture
- metering in manual mode for consistent results
- exposure for portraiture
- composition for portraiture
- locations and knowing what you can make of them
- basic posing
- light and what to look for
- getting warmed up
- knowing when to move on
- backlighting / flare
- what to do when the weather is against you
- multiple looks from one scene / basic off camera flash photography
This course will be held in the Jamsil area, starting at Olympic Bridge on the Han River waterfront, and moving through the city streets up into Olympic Park for our sunset and twilight shoots.
A professional model will be available throughout the workshop, and all participants will have the chance to shoot high quality portraits and go home with new portfolio pieces. A model-release will also be provided on the day.
The workshop will start from the basics and lead up to more complicated concepts by the end of the day. It will cover many of the aspects of the style of portraiture that Dylan shoots in, and will help participants to radically improve their outdoor portraiture.
When will this workshop be?
The course is scheduled for Saturday, September 3rd 2011, from 2:30pm to 8:30pm.
Who is it for?
This workshop is primarily for those who have a good understanding of their DSLR, and are looking to improve their portraiture.

Participants should have a good understanding of how to use their camera and make good exposures in full-manual mode. A DSLR camera will be required for many aspects of this course, including feedback during the workshop.
What does it cost?
The course will be limited to 8 students and weighs in at a mere 100,000won. A professional model, drinks and snacks, and printed/digital copies of the workshop notes are included with this cost. Hey Dylan. Actually, I would love to join the Sept. 3 outdoor portraiture course if there is still room. Can you let me know, and then if so, we can make payment arrangements.
Cheers, mate!
Corey
Hey Dylan, How’s tricks?
I really wish I could make it to the first workshop, I think a smaller sized class would be extremely useful.
Can you or Flash recommend a helpful guide to landscape photography? This is one area I am really wanting to work on and was wondering if you could shed some light.
Thanks so much guys, Keep up the hard work.
The site is looking really good.
Colin –
If you can wait about … oh, six weeks… I’ll have one released. I’m in the process of wrapping up our first Light Guide. I think it’s going to be pretty sensational, but I’m also slightly biased. haha
Corey –
Hopefully Dylan has seen your note and contacted you directly. If not, shoot him or me an email and we’ll put you in touch.
Hi!
This workshop is exactly what I need because I want to learn how to use a DSLR…but alas I have not yet bought one. Will you be offering this type of workshop again in the future, such as in a couple months?
Hi Tiffani,
We may be offering this course in the future, but have not set a second date for it yet. Another option you may look into would be borrowing or renting a DSLR for the two lessons we have. In our second lesson we will also be covering how to shop for a DSLR and equipment in Seoul, so you may be able to purchase your own with a little more background knowledge.
Thanks again for your interest.
Ok, I’ll look into that idea. If not I’ll check back here every now and then to look for the next one. Thanks!
